This extraordinary phenomenon at the Adams River near Salmon Arm happens every year in late September and throughout October. The annual salmon run is the largest in the world and the Podollan Inn Salmon Arm is delighted to share in the celebration. The journey of the salmon begins with them returning from the Pacific Ocean through the Fraser River and swimming 485km to the place they were born in the Adams River. The salmon reproduce and die. Their journey is long and difficult, with a swim taking over 2 weeks through currents and natural challenges. Female salmon lay their eggs in the shallow gravel and rocky waters of the Adams River and the males fertilize them. Both the female and male die shortly afterwards. The eggs offer new life in the spring. The display of crimson coloured sockeye salmon is breath taking from the viewing area at the Roderick Haig-Brown Provincial Park, just west of the city of Salmon Arm, with wall to wall red salmon with green heads – a spectacle to be seen.
The Podollan Inn Salmon Arm offers a tour with vehicle and guide from September 20 to the end of October that includes the history of the area, a visit to the viewing and hiking area at the Adams River for plenty of photos and interactive displays, followed by a tour of 2 local award winning wineries, a 3 course dinner at Table 24 at the Podollan Inn with wine pairing, and a restful evening stay at the boutique hotel. The aptly named tour – the Adams River – Salmon’n Wine Discovery Tour also includes lunch and Charcuterie.
