Nestled in the boreal forest at the confluence of four rivers, Fort McMurray is known as the "Northern light" capital of the world. Sports and nature enthusiasts will enjoy the many outdoor activities such as, hiking, fishing, golfing and birdwatching, just to name a few.

Home to approximately 70,000 people, "The Fort" is abundant in history, resources and adventure. It boasts state-of-the-art recreational facilities, movies/live theatre as well as seasonal festivities and celebrations.

Fort McMurray is also the centre of Alberta's oil sands industry with deposits - second only to the Saudi Arabia reserves - that were described by Time Magazine as "Canada's greatest buried energy treasure," and "could satisfy the world's demand for petroleum for the next century." Oil Sands are deposits of bitumen, a molasses-like viscous oil that will not flow unless heated or diluted with lighter hydrocarbons. They are contained in three major areas beneath 140,800 square kilometres of north-eastern Alberta - an area twice the size of New Brunswick. However, only about two per cent of the initial established resource has been produced to date.
